Archbishop’s Visitation to the Episcopal Church of the Solomon Islands 24th – 29th April 2014.

A well planned Programme and Itinerary had been arranged and delivered for the Archiepiscopal Visitation to the Episcopal Church of the Solomon Islands by Metropolitan Archbishop John Langley.

Shortly after arriving at Honiara, the Archbishop was very pleased to celebrate the Holy Eucharist at Holy Trinity Church at Mount Kopal. After the Service, the Archbishop was treated to lively singing, dancing entertainment and feasting provided by the parishioners.

The following morning he was able to meet with Bishop Lonsdale and discuss relevant Church topics etc. In the late afternoon Archbishop John, Bishop Lonsdale and a delegation from ECOSI left Honiara by boat for Isabel Island.

At Kolotubi, the Archbishop was greeted by the Marching Band and Singers and Flower Girls who led him to the Community Meeting Place. The Priests, Chiefs, Elders, Mother’s Union, Parishioners and children greeted him. They also welcomed him in speech and song.

At Evensong in the late afternoon, in the Church of Christ the King, the Archbishop administered Confirmation to 23 children. This was followed by a programme of feasting and entertainment.

The next morning, Archbishop John celebrated the Holy Eucharist, preached and administered Holy Communion to the newly Confirmed children receiving their First Holy Communion. It was a very moving Service.

A programme of feasting and activities followed the Service. Archbishop John presented a Bible to Fr. Gabrial parish priest of Kolotubi and a donation from St Luke’s, Sale Australia to Bishop Lonsdale. Farewell speeches were made. The parishioners sang ‘God be with you till we meet again’ to the Archbishop before he gave his final blessing.

The Metropolitan Archbishop was uplifted and humbled by his Visitation. The love, fellowship and friendship of The Episcopal Church of the Solomon Islands were sincerely expressed to the Archbishop. He was so grateful to Bishop Lonsdale, Priests, Chiefs, elders and Parishioners and to all for the care, planning, help, rehearsing and cooking etc which was so lovingly prepared for his Visit.

Gippsland Times-Spectator, Friday 20 July 2012

'New parish installs bishop, archbishop.

Nearly 100 people celebrated with the Parish of St Luke in Sale on Sunday, as Archbishop John Langley of the Anglican Episcopal Church International, consecrated the Reverend Stuart Lawson as bishop.

Archbishop Langley had travelled from Perth with his wife Patricia, and other friends and family of Bishop Lawson travelled from across Gippsland, as well as from Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and other parts of New South Wales.

The Seventh Day Adventist Church minister and members had made the use of their hall available for the service and Bishop Lawson acknowledged the spirit in which such co-operation was made.

He said the aim of his church was to establish other churches and welcomed contact from anyone who might wish to help establish new Anglican-style parishes.

The AECI has no paid ministry and meets together in homes or rented premises.

Archbishop Langley spoke during the service on the difficulties facing people in many Christian denominations in keeping true to the Bible and keeping at bay those ideas that would undermine the Christian heritage.

Towards the end of the service, Bishop Lawson, as his first act as bishop, installed Archbishop Langley as the Metropolitan Archbishop of the church, and he will take up the mantle of responsibility for the church worldwide when he returns to Perth.

Bishop Lawson had previously been honorary assistan priest in the Anglican diocesan cathedral in Gippsland before resigning from that position and the Anglican Church earlier this year amid his concerns around the direction the church had been taking.

His concerns included the appointment of known homosexuals as priests in the church.'

July 2010

An Episcopal Visitation was made by Bishop John Langley to the Episcopal Church of the Solomon Islands. The purpose of this Visit was to welcome the Episcopal Church of the Solomon Islands (ECOSI) into affiliation with AECI under the jurisdiction of Bishop John and to administer Confirmation to 48 children. Here is Bishop John's brief report of his visit:

The clergy and people of the Episcopal Church of the Solomon Islands are very devout traditional Anglicans. They left the mainstream Anglican Communion just over two years ago and since then have been without a bishop. The Solomon Islands clergy contacted John and he took oversight of them. This visit was arranged and a well-planned programme was put into place.

John arrived in Honiara, capital of SI, and was greeted by clergy and church officials at the airport. He was transported to a Christian guest house to freshen up before the evening meal. At 11 pm he was taken to the harbour to take an overnight cargo vessel (7 hour journey) to the Island of Isabel where most of the members of the church live. The vessel was crowded with people and cargo. There was only one seat on board – and that was for the bishop!

After docking at Isabel, transport was arranged,(a Massey-Ferguson truck and trailer), to take him to the village of Kolotubi. He was greeted by a road-block of Nemei warriors, complete with spears, axes and shields who took him to the Chief. The Chief wanted to know why he had come to the village, did he come in peace and what stories would he tell them! After telling that he came in peace, he was then chair-lifted to the village, where he was greeted by a children’s choir, village elders, church officials and others. There were then welcome speeches and singing by the children, before John was taken on a journey into the mountains to appreciate the Island. The village had no running water and no electricity, apart from a small generator which was used for a couple of lights. No flushing toilets!

In the late afternoon a log-drum was beaten to sound the call for Evensong. Over 430 men, women and children met in the old church building and then processed with their new bishop to a new church building to celebrate Evensong and Confirmation.

John blessed and dedicated the new Church, font and altar. He confirmed 48 children. It was a very moving and uplifting service. It was also very hot and humid especially wearing vestments!

In the evening the whole village gathered for a community feast. Entertainment of cultural songs and dances had been arranged. It was absolutely amazing. A truly fantastic experience.

Next morning at 6.30, John celebrated Mass for the community, over 380 receiving Holy Communion. After breakfast and farewell speeches, John then made the 7 hour boat journey back to the main island of Guadalcanal. The following morning John was taken to the mountain village of Kopol to celebrate Mass and then share a fellowship meal followed by the parishioners singing choruses.

The faith and worship of these people is a great encouragement. It is very humbling to be in the presence of such good Christians. Their singing is a reflection of what they believe in their hearts.John then had a day and a half rest in order to see some of the sights of the island before returning home.

He intends to go there again in September/October to consecrate one of their own priests, the Rev'd.Lonsdale Hoamana, as a bishop. Having their own Bishop on the islands will add to their authority as a growing church. There are about 2000 church members so far.

The Episcopal Church of the Solomon Islands now has its own website.

This is a new venture for ECOSI. We are excited and pleased with the results and response to our newly developed website. There is still some work to be done on it. But it is already proving interesting and informative about the Traditional Anglican continuing church movement.

The website is,    www.ecosi.weebly.com

On Saturday, 2nd October 2010, in the Church of St Barnabas, Koge, Isabel Province, Most Reverend John Langley was Installed as Archbishop of the Province of Australia and Oceania for the Anglican Episcopal Church International, during a public celebration of the Holy Eucharist, by Rt Rev'd Dr Lonsdale Hoamana CJ. Hon ThD.

Sept 30th - 5th October 2010.  2nd Visitation to Solomon Islands

Bishop John returned to the Solomon Islands at the beginning of this month in order to consecrate one of the priests of the Episcopal Church of the Solomon Islands as a Bishop in the Anglican tradition.

After arriving in Honiara, he had a few hours respite before taking the 7 hour boat ride to the Island of Isabel. The services were to take place in the village of Koge, high in the mountains, which was the home village of Father Lonsdale Hoamana who was to be made Bishop. The village was an hour and three quarters travel by Massey-Ferguson tractor and trailer. Added to which there was also a 30 minutes trek down a very, very steep ‘pathway’!

The ‘pathway’ was very narrow, no vehicle access at all, slippery and with two small streams to wade through. Because of its inhospitability the villagers had cut steps (nearly 200) out of the clay and mud for Bishop John. He only fell down once!

He was met along the trek by warriors, flower girls, marching choir, chiefs, clergy and elders, who escorted him into the village.

All the villagers had assembled to greet him. Welcome songs were sung; welcomed by the Village Chief, speeches and then breakfast. A room has been prepared for him in the ‘guest house’. Outside an enclosure had been made and a portable flushing toilet had been provided, together with a shower. Running water supplied from a waterfall just outside the village.

The village children were all pleased and enjoyed playing with the balloons which Bishop John had taken for them.

The programme for this visit had been planned out and was well-timed. Time had been arranged for Bishop John and clergy to meet for a rehearsal for the Consecration Service.

After the afternoon drums had been sounded, all the villagers made their way up a steep embankment to the Church ready for the service. The church was packed. The processional party left the vestry and walked to the main entrance of the church. They processed in, with Father Lonsdale in traditional costume escorted by his parents and preceded by women dancers.

The service of Consecration for the new bishop was very moving for all who took part. All was done with great dignity and sense of the occasion. The new bishop was given his symbols of Episcopal Office i.e., crozier, ring, bible, cross, cope and mitre. His head and hands were anointed with Oil. Prayers were said, hymns sung, and all was done with due reverence by clergy and congregation. The service of Holy Communion continued with the new bishop as celebrant.

After his first blessing as Bishop and photo opportunities, all made their way down to the village meeting area to prepare for the evening feast and entertainment. What a feast had been prepared! Plenty for everyone! And then the host villagers and various groups from the other villages presented their contributions in song and dance.

It had been arranged that the first duty of the new bishop would be to install Bishop John as Archbishop of the Anglican Episcopal Church International. This duly took place the following morning at the 6:30 am service of Holy Communion. Bishop Lonsdale must be the first bishop in history to install a bishop as an archbishop within 15 hours of his own consecration!

After the service, everyone gathered for breakfast. Then final farewell speeches were made, the choirs sang and archbishop John was presented with gifts of a beautiful hand carved wooden chalice and also a ‘hanging basket’ hand made out of hundreds of polished shells.

Having said goodbyes, Archbishop John and party had to make their way back up the mountain path before getting on the tractor. What a climb! It took nearly one and three quarter hours to reach the plateau where the tractor was! It was so hot and humid!

After the boat ride back to Honiara there was a couple of hours to refresh before setting off for the next appointed service at Kopol. Bishop John felt quite at home at the church in Kopol as he has visited there on his previous trip.

The next day and a half were spent relaxing before the flights back home to Australia.

The people of the Solomon Islands certainly know how to treat an archbishop; how to feed him and look after him as best they can. They have great respect for their clergy.
